From Monster to Me

When children meet someone new, one of the first things they learn to share is their name. Saying “My name is…” is an important communication skill, whether it is expressed verbally or through AAC. This playful AAC-friendly story uses silly nicknames, humor, repetition, colorful illustrations, and visual supports to model “My name is…” without pressure. Children can participate using spoken words, a speech-generating device, pictures, gestures, eye gaze, direct touch, or “GO” to turn the page. Created by a Speech-Language Pathologist and mother of an AAC user, this engaging read-aloud helps early and emerging communicators practice introducing themselves and become familiar with navigating to “my name is” on their communication systems. Ideal for nonspeaking and minimally speaking children, AAC users, families, educators, Speech-Language Pathologists, therapists, classrooms, and school libraries.
